The game was Boston Celtics vs. Golden State Warriors in one of those big TNT broadcasts with Kevin Harlan on the call.
Warriors guard Steph Curry was – as he has been so many times – one of the star attractions, and he delivered.
Curry was clutch.
In the final three three minutes and 56 seconds of the fourth quarter and in the five-minute overtime period of that game, Curry scored 13 of his game-high 33 points. He was 4-for-7 from the field, including 3-for-4 on 3-pointers, and 2-for-2 from the foul line.
Curry’s 30-foot 3-pointer with 3:05 left in the fourth quarter cut Boston’s lead to 116-115, and his step-back 3 with 1:35 remaining in the fourth tied the score at 121. He gave the Warriors a 127-123 edge on a layup with 38.9 seconds left in overtime, and his high-arcing 3-pointer from the right wing with 10.6 seconds to go sealed Golden State’s 130-126 victory.
Curry on Thursday was named the 2023-24 NBA Clutch Player of the Year.
In clutch time – the NBA defines that as the final five minutes of the fourth quarter or overtime when the score is within five points – Curry averaged 4.4 points (second-best in the NBA among players appearing in more than one clutch game), shot 49.6% from the field, 45.7% on 3-pointers and 95.1% from the free throw line.
Chicago’s DeMar DeRozan and Oklahoma City guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander were finalists. Curry edged DeRozan in voting points, 298-272. DeRozan received more second- and third-place votes, but Curry had 45 first-place votes to DeRozan's 34, pushing him to the award which comes with the Jerry West Trophy.
